Facilitating Social Integration

Dialogue and Media

The ICPA realized a great need to utilize every possible medium to raise the voice of moderate Muslims, especially in an era challenged by public opinion and surrounded with injustice and stereotype. It was necessary to equip the Australian Muslim community with relevant tools by which to celebrate their moderate beliefs and correct misconceptions against their religion.

The ICPA also acknowledged the importance for the Australian Muslim community to participate in aspects of Australian life, to be informed and to inform. From this mindset, the ICPA was at the core, assisting the establishment of the Muslim Community Radio in 1996, the first community radio station to serve the Sydney Muslim community.

It became an independent entity in 2000 when the Australian Broadcasting Authority (ACMA) awarded the Muslim Community Radio the permanent community radio license to broadcast 24/7. Radio 2MFM is a solid platform of community participation. Its multilingual programs are a product of diverse community involvement. Radio 2MFM projects the voice of moderate Australia Muslims. Through live programs and talkback shows, it also enables its community of listeners to voice their opinions and strengthen their Australian identity.

It is focused on serving the needs of nearly 200,000 Sydney Muslims through radio programs, with a voice that is heard around the world on the internet. Its growing pool of volunteers and members including men, women and youth, ensure that 2MFM remains operated by the community and for the community.

Participation and Leadership

The ICPA recognizes that active participation on all levels is integral to being heard. It provides access and opportunities for its members to network with a variety of bodies and participate on committees and boards to encourage mutual dialogue, heightened awareness and leadership skills.

The ICPA provides a training ground for future leaders and policy makers to emerge from among the Australian Muslim community. Some of these opportunities include:

  • Delegate speakers to address the media in times of controversy and issues management
  • Select ambassadors to attend formal functions, participate in government steering committees and in community consultation groups that arise to advise on government policy
  • Endorse high academic achievers to be elected on boards and be invited to attend annual general meetings of network bodies

The ICPA considers having a voice must be accompanied by a sense of responsibility and duty. These are achieved through sound knowledge and proper representation – the pillars upon which the ICPA is founded.
